ÉTUDES is a research and performance project born in 2018 from the desire to explore and observe the trace of the hammering gesture in different physical practices, crafts, sounds and dances, in different cultures and territories. It is a living collection project.

ÉTUDES is a research and performance project born in 2018.

The starting point of this research is the desire to explore and observe the trace of the gesture of hammering in different physical practices, crafts, sounds and dances, on different cultures and territories.

Through this project, and for the past few years, I have been weaving a living collection of stories, gestures, movements collected during conversations, about their hammering practice, with people I met in different contexts.

Starting these conversations with the question of what the action of hammering does to the body and to space, I articulate different reflections around how these practices, these dances, are born? What place do they occupy in the various rituals of communities? How are they transmitted?

What link could there be between these dances, practices, professions and their geographical environment?

Finally, how does the public space also contain a multitude of pounding sounds?

This polymorphic project approaches artistic work from the angle of study, and creates a context in which exchange and transmission are the driving forces behind choreographic practices. It crystallises through the presentation of various protean performances and sound installations presented ‘in situ’ and in non-theatrical contexts.
